Description
Globalization has now settled-in. Most companies, regardless of size, now have owned facilities and/or supplier relationships in multiple countries across the globe. Outsourcing has now settled-in. Cost-of-Goods-Sold used to be 80% in-house and it is now 80% out-of-house. These days, R&D, product development, and manufacturing for any single product emanates from a dozen or more locations.
Companies, industries, countries and even economic regions realize that they cannot be expert across all design and manufacturing technologies and capabilities. It is simply too expensive to nurture and maintain labor pools of qualified people. Corporations use outsourcing, open innovation, alliances, in-licensing, and other techniques to deliver the product capabilities that stretch their competencies. Governments and trading regions are following suit. There are specific industries they target and legislatively pursue to create a critical mass of expertise in their economies. One example is France, who has been emphasizing consumer electronics and is now making its presence felt at the Consumer Electronics Show each year.
DFMA resources and capabilities don't need to be everywhere, but they do need to be in the locations and geographies that have or have targeted industries and technologies central to the DFMA body of knowledge. Research from a number of sources will be assembled and codified to identify the places where DFMA is needed now and may thrive in the years ahead.
