Introduction:This presentation was made at The Altshuller Institute Annual International Forum on TRIZ held March 3, 2016 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Description:  As the world achieved the globalization of commerce in the 2000s, the playing field of competitive advantage was leveled. There was now equal access to low cost manufacturing. The tools that enabled lean, agile, flexible, and six sigma efficiencies were available to all players large and small. What then was the next source of possible competitive advantage? The answer was to create products that were more innovative than one's competitors. For the past fifteen years, innovation has been the mantra. Due to the huge global demand, some three hundred tools have now been created to improve innovation. TRIZ now competes among them, whereas before 2000 TRIZ was one of the few available. There has been great turnover as industry rejects those tools that are not effective. New tools appear on the market every day. TRIZ is one of the tools with staying power, among the top five in use today. This presentation categorizes the four major types of tools available today, their respective advantages, and TRIZ's place among them. Approaches are suggested as to how companies can more systematically embed innovation capabilities into their development environment, TRIZ and others, where they will be most effective. The presentation concludes with some TRIZ-specific opportunity areas where industry penetration could likely be increased.
