This article presents results from all sections GGI’s 2004 Product Development Metrics Survey. Current industry practice for the product selection process is presented and analyzed. The most common tools used for selecting products, creating innovation and generating intellectual property are detailed. The IP management process is defined and results are compared to those for the product selection process. The most common tools and systems to manage IP are described. Top corporate metrics currently in use are listed and compared to prior surveys to indicate trends. Opportunities for progress and emerging needs are described, especially in the areas of IP management and tools.
