This article features primary research conducted in 2002 by GGI in the areas of time spend on new products and staffing ratios between different departments within Engineering/Product Development, and cross-functionally. The premise of the research is that understaffed departments cause bottlenecks in the product development pipeline, analogous to critical work center analysis in manufacturing operations. Time spent on new products versus sustaining and support time is summarized. Ratios between selected functions within Engineering and cross-functionally are summarized.
