GGI's Linked Metrics Portfolio(sm) receives Service Mark

Goldense Group, Inc. (GGI) has received its third service mark from the U.S. Patent Office, this time for its Linked Metrics Portfolio(sm) methodology. The Linked Metrics Portfolio is a natural fit for environments that have many projects, such as marketing, research and development, and operations. It allows project, functional, and improvement teams to identify key metrics and roll them up to the vice presidential level. It also provides for a downward link between levels.

"Some say that the 'Linked Metrics Portfolio' has equal utility to that of the 'Balanced Scorecard,'" said Bradford L. Goldense, GGI President. "We are pleased that the U.S. Patent Office recognizes this differentiation," Goldense said.

Linked Metrics Portfolio received its service mark on December 26, 2006 as Reg. No. 3,190,267.

AMEX's First New Index Class in 35 Years is in the field of IP

Recognized by The American Stock Exchange as the first major, broad-based market equity index to be launched in 35 years, the Ocean Tomo 300(tm) Patent Index (AMEX:OTPAT) is an index of 300 companies that own the most valuable patents relative to their book value. Over a 10-year period ending November 2006, the Index would have outperformed the S&P 500 by more than 300 basis points annualized. Selection methodology identifies companies that have the highest ratio of patent value to book value across the full spectrum of market capitalizations and investment styles. Further details on the Index, its methodology, and a compete list of companies in the Index, are available at

The Medici Effect: What Elephants & Epidemics Can Teach Us About Innovation, Frans Johansson, Harvard Business School Press, 2006, Copyright 2006 by Frans Johansson, ISBN 1-4221-0282-3.

Author Frans Johansson proposes that the most successful innovations come from a mental space he calls "The Intersection." Intersections are formed when people of diverse disciplines come together to tackle a problem.

One such innovation was developed by a team Brown University researchers who learned to "mind read" the thoughts of a rhesus monkey through the use of electrodes and a custom-built computer program. Johansson argues that the team's success was possible due to the multi-disciplinary nature of the group, which included mathematicians, medical doctors, neuroscientists and computer scientists.

Johansson cautions, however, that the actualization of ideas generated at "The Intersection" involves overcoming resistance from one's peers and persevering through false starts.

Other topics Johansson covers include:

  • Breaking down barriers between fields
  • Finding winning combinations
  • Leaving your network behind

This is a general concept book that needs to be read, put aside and ruminated over. We recommend it to managers who want to create a new product line or to entrepreneurs looking to start a new business.

GGI will sponsor its R&D--Product Development Innovation Summit on May 15-17, 2007 in metro Boston. Please join us for eight comprehensive modules that surround the subject of Innovation in R&D and Product Development.

The goals of the Innovation Summit are to help innovation leaders sort out  "innovation processes" from "innovation tools and techniques. The Summit will review the history of innovation over the past 15 years and will inventory the range of tools, techniques, and software available today. All of this will be put in a context so that specific action may be taken to improve a company's inventive abilities.

The Innovation Modules are:

All modules feature some level of case study discussion and include examples from a range of industries. There will be three group exercises to practice well-regarded innovation methodologies. As with all GGI Summits, we will pave the road for you to direct the selection and implementation of tools and process that will bring leverage to your organization.

Discounts are available for teams of two or more people attending from the same company.

If RN readers are planning on attending, please register now for the Innovation Summit.

For more details on the Product Development Summit, please go to GGI's Innovation Summit web site which is also available on our home page. If you are already registered, our leisure time activities page may prove useful for planning transportation, meals, and personal time outside the Summit.
