(GGI) has received its third service mark from the U.S. Patent Office, this time for its Linked Metrics Portfolio(sm) methodology. The Linked Metrics Portfolio is a natural fit for environments that have many projects, such as marketing, research and development, and operations. It allows project, functional, and improvement teams to identify key metrics and roll them up to the vice presidential level. It also provides for a downward link between levels. "Some say that the 'Linked Metrics Portfolio' has equal utility to that of the 'Balanced Scorecard,'" said Bradford L. Goldense, GGI President. "We are pleased that the U.S. Patent Office recognizes this differentiation," Goldense said. Linked Metrics Portfolio received its service mark on December 26, 2006 as Reg. No. 3,190,267.

Over a 10-year period ending November 2006, the Index would have outperformed the S&P 500 by more than 300 basis points annualized. Selection methodology identifies companies that have the highest ratio of patent value to book value across the full spectrum of market capitalizations and investment styles. Further details on the Index, its methodology, and a compete list of companies in the Index, are available at www.OceanTomoIndexes.com.
BOOK REVIEW The Medici Effect: What Elephants & Epidemics Can Teach Us About Innovation, Frans Johansson, Harvard Business School Press, 2006, Copyright 2006 by Frans Johansson, ISBN 1-4221-0282-3. Author Frans Johansson proposes that the most successful innovations come from a mental space he calls "The Intersection." Intersections are formed when people of diverse disciplines come together to tackle a problem. One such innovation was developed by a team Brown University researchers who learned to "mind read" the thoughts of a rhesus monkey through the use of electrodes and a custom-built computer program. Johansson argues that the team's success was possible due to the multi-disciplinary nature of the group, which included mathematicians, medical doctors, neuroscientists and computer scientists. Johansson cautions, however, that the actualization of ideas generated at "The Intersection" involves overcoming resistance from one's peers and persevering through false starts. Other topics Johansson covers include:
This is a general concept book that needs to be read, put aside and ruminated over. We recommend it to managers who want to create a new product line or to entrepreneurs looking to start a new business. To learn more about The Medici Effect or to order the book, visit the Amazon.com Web site.
