Summarized from "WIPO Publishes Guide on Patents for Business," WIPO Press Release 2005/254, Geneva, June 28, 2005. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has just released a useful booklet on patents entitled "Inventing the Future: An Introduction to Patents for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises." This publication explains the process of obtaining and protecting a patent for companies to manage innovation and thereby advance their strategic business goals. The guide provides companies with tips on developing a patent strategy that fits with their business. While the stated focus is on small and medium-sized firms, we believe that even larger firms can benefit from the practical information contained in the guide. This guide is the third in WIPO's series on Intellectual Property for Business. The first two guides cover Trademarks ("Making a Mark: An Introduction to Trademarks for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises") and Design ("Looking Good: An Introduction to Industrial Design for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises"). All three guides are available as free pdf downloads from the WIPO web site. Next month, RN will feature more information on resources for IP valuation.

Product Lifecycle Management: 21st Century Paradigm for Product Realization, by John Stark. Springer-Verlag. 2004, 1st edition. 400 pages. John Stark, publisher of 2PLM ezine, has recently written a book on product lifecycle management, which we are pleased to share with you. Stark's book, "Product Lifecycle Management," covers all aspects of PLM and how to implement a complete PLM program in your company. The author defines PLM as "the activity of managing a company's products all the way across their lifecycles in the most effective way." Most of us are well familiar that the product lifecycle begins with the initial idea, continues through product definition and development, and extends beyond launch to product support and finally product end-of-life. PLM helps companies get products to market faster, provide customers with better support, and better manage the end of a product's life. PLM provides an answer to many issues currently faced by product-oriented companies, such as technology advances, outsourcing, effects of the Internet, regulatory and environmental concerns, complex products, and large volumes of data, to name just a few. This book goes beyond the description of PLM and all of the problems and drivers that provide a rationale for PLM, and guides you through the process of creating a vision, mission and strategy for PLM. Details on implementation of a Product Data Management (PDM) system are provided, as an essential enabler of PLM. PDM systems are the primary component of PLM systems, since they manage all product data and product workflow. The author takes you through implementation steps as well as helps you anticipate implementation problems and naysayers. The book is full of examples of PLM in a variety of companies in different industries, such as electronics, automotive, engineering and aerospace. A PDM maturity model shows the typical progress and benefits a company can expect as it advances in its PLM implementation. For a comprehensive reference and hands-on guide for managing your products from cradle to grave, this is the book to own. You can find more information about John Stark's latest book or purchase this book through Amazon.
